Synthesis of lithium aluminate for application in radiation dosimetry

This study focuses on the synthesis of lithium aluminate material. The obtained γ-LiAlO2 material for application in radiation dosimetry is reported. γ-LiAlO2 powder was prepared by a sol-gel approach and a solid state reaction method for comparison purpose. The lithium aluminate was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that LiAlO2 powder has a crystalline structure in the gamma- phase form depending strongly on calcined temperature. Both methods produced completely pure γ-LiAlO2 with the average density of 2.615g/cm3 at a relatively low temperature (at 900°C). The average size of the material prepared by the sol-gel method was found to be smaller than that obtained by the solid state reaction approach. The present study reports the first experiment producing γ-LiAlO2 material.

Authors: Rusch R, Greenman J, Scanlon C, Horne K, Jonas DF Abstract Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that could potentially be utilized by pediatric palliative care social workers to aid in providing individualized support and adaptive coping techniques through end-of-life and bereavement. Multiple modalities of implementing bibliotherapy are considered, including applications in individual and group counseling. An institutionally supported bibliotherapy program that aims to provide therapeutic and recreational texts for patients, families and clinicians is described. Suggested guidelines and book titles...

Authors: Steinmetz RG, Maupin JJ, Johnson EB, Cantrell AJ, Fox JA, Bernhardt JA, Pasque CB, Teague DC Abstract INTRODUCTION: Extra-articular scapula body fractures have been shown to have good outcomes with nonsurgical management. What is not known is whether routine postinjury imaging of these fractures is necessary for monitoring healing and alignment. As the shift toward providing cost-effective healthcare continues, we sought to evaluate if routine postinjury imaging of these fractures resulted in any change in management while secondarily evaluating the imaging for fracture patterns at risk of displacement. ...

Abstract Background Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) is the main cause of chronic leg ulcers. Varicose veins are the most frequent cause of venous leg ulcers (VLU). 50.9% of Brazilian women have varicose veins and ulcer prevalence is as high as 4%. Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) is a low-cost treatment option for varicose veins. Objectives To analyze UGFS outcomes in patients with VLU. Methods Prospective consecutive single center cohort study. Patients with great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux and VLU were treated and followed-up for 180 days. The following were studied: quality of life (QoL), disease severity, heal...

Conclusions. Although there is an association between malignancy and IE, no treatment strategy has yet been developed for these patients. Short-term outcome of IE is unaltered by cancer. In most papers, the effect of cancer on mid-term survival is only significant in a univariate analysis, without being a predictor. The results indicate that cardiac surgery for IE should not be withheld in patients in whom a treatable malignancy has been found. PMID: 32233824 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion: There is a slightly increasing trend in the occurrence of esophageal perforations. Contemporary treatment is less invasive with similar results. Patients treated in high-volume hospitals have better prognosis. PMID: 32233883 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Abstinence from alcohol following AC/AH diagnosis was achieved in 39% of patients. Abstinence was not related to increased survival for alcoholic liver disease patients at one-year, which might partly indicate that this might be a marker that some patients were 'too sick to drink'. AC and AH patients who survived one year and remained abstinent had a favorable long-term prognosis. PMID: 32233877 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Møller S, Kimer N, Barløse M, Bendtsen F Abstract Detailed knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms and changes in hepatic and splanchnic function leading to the development of haemodynamic changes and portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis are essential since it guides the search for targets to ameliorate liver-related abnormalities. Recent research has focused on the gut-liver axis, changes in intestinal permeability, translocation of bacterial products, and inflammation as important drivers of haemodynamic alterations and thereby targets for treatment. Addit...
