ViroPanel: Hybrid capture and massively parallel sequencing for simultaneous detection and profiling of oncogenic virus infection and tumor genome

We present a hybrid-capture and massively parallel sequencing (MPS) approach to detect viral infection that is integrated with targeted genomic analysis to provide a more complete tumor profile from a single sample.

We present recent studies about newly developed or adjusted tools, the applicability of nutritional screening tools in specific populations, and how to implement screening in the overall process of improving nutritional care in the pediatric hospital setting. Summary Three new screening tools have been developed for use on admission to hospital: two for the mixed pediatric hospitalized population and one for infants. A simple weekly rescreening tool to identify hospital-acquired nutritional deterioration was developed for use in children with prolonged hospital stay. Different from most previous studies that only assess...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe aim to recast the diagnosis of osteosarcopenia in light of its pathophysiology rather than of the age at which it is diagnosed. We will consider why we think the diagnosis of osteosarcopenia is missed in those who are not elderly and why pharmacologic treatment based on pathophysiology rather than age may provide a more comprehensive treatment for patients with the condition.Recent FindingsWe will present recent findings on the pathogenesis of osteosarcopenia from two distinct groups of patients which will highlight why pathophysiology is of paramount importance in designing treatment.SummaryWe ...

ómez-Serranillos Aloe vera has been traditionally used to treat skin injuries (burns, cuts, insect bites, and eczemas) and digestive problems because its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound healing properties. Research on this medicinal plant has been aimed at validating traditional uses and deepening the mechanism of action, identifying the compounds responsible for these activities. The most investigated active compounds are aloe-emodin, aloin, aloesin, emodin, and acemannan. Likewise, new actions have been investigated for Aloe vera and its active compounds. This review provides an overview of current...

In this study, we intravenously administrated the young mitochondria into aged mice to evaluate whether energy production increase in aged tissues or age-related behaviors improved after the mitochondrial transplantation. The results showed that heterozygous mitochondrial DNA of both aged and young mouse coexisted in tissues of aged mice after mitochondrial administration, and meanwhile, ATP content in tissues increased while reactive oxygen species (ROS) level reduced. Besides, the mitotherapy significantly improved cognitive and motor performance of aged mice. Our study, at the first report in aged animals, not only prov...

We report the development of a robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction through a single incision using the updated single-port surgical robot system for a patient with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Breast reconstruction was performed using implants. Postoperative pathological examination revealed DCIS in both breasts. There were no major immediate complications, except for a minor skin burn on the right breast. Overall, the initial operation using the updated platform was safely performed. PMID: 32140275 [PubMed]

The future of healthcare is shaping up in front of our very eyes with advances in digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, VR/AR, 3D-printing, robotics or nanotechnology. We have to familiarize with the latest developments in order to be able to control technology and not the other way around. The future of healthcare lies in working hand-in-hand with technology and healthcare workers have to embrace emerging technologies in order to stay relevant in the coming years. Be bold, curious and informed! Are you afraid that robots will take over the jobs of nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals? Are y...

CONCLUSIONS: The CELx HSF test is a well-characterized functional biomarker assay capable of identifying dynamic HER2-driven signaling dysfunction in tumor cells from HER2-negative breast cancer patients. This test has demonstrated efficacy of various HER2 targeted therapies in live tumor cells from the HSFs+ population and correlated the test result to HER2 drug response in mouse xenograft studies. The proportion of HER2-negative breast cancer patients found to have abnormal HER2 signaling in a 114 patient sample study, 20-25%, is significant. A clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of anti-HER2 therapies in this...

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer type in humans. Various factors play a role in BCC occurrence, but sunlight exposure is the most common etiologic factor. This case series presents three patients who had scarring after severe traumas (a deep abrasion, burn, and puncture injury); a long time after the respective traumatic events, a BCC occurred in the scar tissue. The lesions were excised, and BCCs were diagnosed based on histopathology. Although several etiologic factors may play a role in trauma-related BCC, the main mechanism remains unclear. A correct diagnosis with biopsy and an assessment of t...
