Quality Improvement Project: Improving Interventional Radiology Response Times for Level I Trauma Embolization

Mortality associated with acute trauma remains high, and death rates up to 30% to 40% after pelvic injuries and 20% to 60% with abdominal vascular injuries have been reported even in large tertiary care trauma centers [1,2]. Timely control of bleeding is vital for improving the outcomes for patients with hemorrhagic shock [3]. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) recommends that an interventional radiologist be available within 30 min to perform procedures in all designated level I and level II trauma centers [4,5] but does not require an in-house interventional radiology (IR) service.
