The role of the transcription factor Tog1 is clarified through comparison of the transcrptome profiles of WT and Tog1 mutant cells. mRNA profiles of WT and ∆tog1 were generated by deep sequ...

AbstractNitric oxide (NO) is a potentially powerful weapon againstCandida albicans, and the regulation of intracellular NO levels is therefore important for controlling its physiological functions. Lactoferricin B like peptide (LBLP) is a 23 ‐mer antimicrobial peptide (AMP) derived from theScolopendra subspinipes mutilans. We confirmed that LBLP treatment led to the generation of endogenous NO inC. albicans, which was associated with the NO synthase pathway. Here, we examined the antifungal activity of LBLP with focus on intracellular NO. Total glutathione levels were measured to evaluate cellular defense capacity agains...

ConclusionsCollectively, our data suggest an urgent need for antifungal stewardship and infection control strategies to improve the clinical outcome of Algerian patients with candidemia. The high prevalence ofC. tropicalis joined by fluconazole-resistance may hamper the therapeutic efficacy of fluconazole, the frontline antifungal drug used in Algeria.

(Natural News) Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), or vaginal thrush, refers to vaginal and vulval symptoms caused by the yeast Candida albicans. These include vaginal discharge, a burning sensation in the affected parts and an itchy rash on the vulva and surrounding skin. VVC is said to affect 75 percent of women at least once in their lifetime. Many...

In this study, we impregnated gellan gum, a natural biopolymer used as a food-additive, with a probiotic and investigated its antifungal activity against Candida albicans Lactobacillus paracasei 28.4, a strain recently isolated from the oral cavity of a caries-free individual, was incorporated in several concentrations of gellan gum (0.6% to 1%). All tested concentrations could incorporate L. paracasei cells while maintaining bacterial viability. Probiotic/gellan formulations were stable for 7 days when stored at room temperature or 4°C. Long-term storage of bacteria-impregnated gellan gum was achieved when L. paracase...
