Online Couple-Based Meditation Intervention for Patients with Primary or Metastatic Brain Tumors and their Partners: Results of a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Although patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors (BT) and their partners are at risk of experiencing high symptom burden, they are often excluded from psychosocial intervention studies. Thus, we sought to examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a couple-based meditation (CBM) program targeting symptom and well-being outcomes.

Brain tumors are the second most common tumor in children accounting for about 1 in 4 tumors. They are also the leading cause of cancer-related death in children. The tumors and their treatments are associated with significant physical symptoms, psychological strain, learning difficulties, and mortality. For these reasons, it is imperative that children with brain tumors have access to palliative care starting at the time of diagnosis. Unfortunately, access to palliative care for these children is not universal and when available is often indroduced late in the couse of disease.

Conclusions: There are several ongoing efforts to use novel ablative therapies directed towards the brain. The recent development of techniques that allow for precise targeting, accurate delivery of thermal doses and real-time visualization of induced tissue damage during the procedure have resulted in novel techniques for cerebral ablation such as magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound or laser interstitial thermal therapy. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a rapid improvement of many symptoms in the subacute post-operative period in pituitary tumor patients. Health-related quality of life (hrQOL) is an often-neglected aspect of care in neurologic disease,1 and all the more so in the management of CNS cancers.2 Knowledge about pathologic grade, extent of tumor burden, and anatomic location may provide little comfort for patients who are coping with diagnoses that cause anxiety, pain, sleep problems, and social isolation. Physician-reported outcomes may focus on physical health with less ability to discern psychosocial dysfunction resulting from the condition. In contrast, patient reported outcomes (PROs) measure quality of life in domains that matter most to patients.

This study represents the first assessment of VTE-associated health care burden specific to primary brain cancer. We confirm that VTE affects a large number of patients with MG (27%) and limits the time spent at home due to increased hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
