Clinical characteristics and intrauterine vertical transmission potential of COVID-19 infection in nine pregnant women: a retrospective review of medical records

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in pregnancy and the intrauterine vertical transmission potential of COVID-19 infection.MethodsClinical records, laboratory results, and chest CT scans were retrospectively reviewed for nine pregnant women with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia (ie, with maternal throat swab samples that were positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]) who were admitted to Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, from Jan 20 to Jan 31, 2020. Evidence of intrauterine vertical transmission was assessed by testing for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in amniotic fluid, cord blood, and neonatal throat swab samples. Breastmilk samples were also collected and tested from patients after the first lactation.FindingsAll nine patients had a caesarean section in their third trimester. Seven patients presented with a fever. Other symptoms, including cough (in four of nine patients), myalgia (in three), sore throat (in two), and malaise (in two), were also observed. Fetal distress was monitored in two cases. Five of nine patients had lymphopenia (

Authors: Shimoni Z, Cohen R, Froom P Abstract Introduction: It is unclear how to prevent the negative impact of inappropriate urine cultures in older acute care patients who have a high rate of asymptomatic bacteriuria.Areas covered: A nonsystematic literature review of the definition, impact, and management of elderly acute care patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB).Expert opinion: In the elderly, patients with ASB include those with extra-urinary tract diseases (e.g. pneumonia) and those with symptoms/signs that resolve without antibiotic therapy, but the diagnosis of ASB is unclear in febrile patients res...

Authors: Akhter MH, Kumar S, Nomani S Abstract Objective: In vitro, optimization, characterization and cytotoxic studies of NAR NPs to against pancreatic cancer.Method: The sonication tailored NARG loaded poly (lactide-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticle (NPs) was fabricated for potential cytotoxic effect against pancreatic cancer. NARG NPs were prepared by emulsion-diffusion evaporation technique applying Box Behnken experimental design based on 3-level and 3-factors. The effect of independent variables surfactant concentration (X1), polymer concentration (X2) and sonication time (X3) were studied on responses p...

Conclusions: Although 3D printed PSTs help to avoid the misplacement of PAs in revision deformity correction surgeries with sublaminar wires in situ, the mean number of misplaced screws per patient using this technique was found to be statistically insignificant when compared with the freehand technique in this study. Conclusions: Clinical symptoms and spinal fusion efficiency were not significantly different between CBT and PS except for postoperative improvement in low back pain. The treatment effect on postoperative low back pain was smaller for CBT than for PS. PMID: 32213798 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusions: In this study, the SUV of 99mTc-MDP was successfully determined using SPECT/CT. This research provides an approach that could potentially aid in the clinical quantification of radionuclide uptake in normal vertebrae for the management of breast cancer patients. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced a statewide stay-at-home order [PDF] Saturday as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continues to increase both in the state and around the country. The order begins Monday and runs through April 19. Kansas becomes the 22nd state to make a statewide order. Twelve Kansas counties, including Johnson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte and most of the state's other most populous counties, already were under varying stay-at-home orders. Authors: Marin GH Abstract Based on some publications that associate SARS-CoV-2 infection with the use of anti-hypertensive drug groups such as angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (e.g. enalapril) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (e.g. losartan), many patients from South America, Central America or Spain, have stopped or intend to interrupt their treatments with these drugs. Hence, it may exist ominous consequences due to this drop out. For this reason, it is necessary to quickly warn about this situation and the risks associated with it. This article reviews the spectrum of activity, the main pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics and the clinical efficacy and safety of ceftolozane-tazobactam in the treatment of HAP/VAP in adult patients.Expert opinion: The results of a randomized clinical trial have demonstrated an efficacy and safety profile of ceftolozane-tazobactam similar to that of its comparator for the treatment of patients with HAP/VAP. Several retrospective studies have shown good efficacy of the drug for the treatment of respiratory infections caused by MDR P. aeruginosa. The use of this drug may be incorporated as a new therapeutic...
