Immune-mediated Skin Disorders and their Oral Manifestations in the Omani Population: A Hospital-based Study.

Conclusions: Several IMDs have considerable oral involvement. These oral manifestations of the diseases may be overlooked by other specialists leading to a delay in the diagnosis and its management. In order to circumvent this delay, the analysis and evaluation of a disease need to be done by a team comprising of a dental surgeon, dermatologist, and an oral medicine specialist. Authors: Zhang S, Deng Y, Huang X, Li N, Fan H, Xiang B, Wu Y, Cheng X, Chen X Abstract OBJECTIVES: We sought to analyse the expression characteristics of cytochrome C oxidase subunit I in mitochondrial of MRL/lpr lupus mice. METHODS: The whole blood of MRL/lpr lupus mice was detected for whole mitochondrial genome sequencing performed by Illumina HiSeq PE150 instrument, compared with house mouse (NC_005089.1) and screened for the maximum difference gene, MT-CO1. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression of MT-CO1 in lupus mic...

Abstract New and Established Therapeutic Options for the Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Abstract. Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multisystem autoimmune disease. The mainstay of therapy are antimalarials, mostly hydroxychloroquine, which should be given whenever possible. Belimumab is in the meantime a well-established add-on treatment. In the first place, joint manifestations as well as skin and fatigue improve. It was also shown to reduce severe flares and steroid use. Another therapeutic option in the future might be the interferon anifrolumab due to positive results in new studies. In case of rena...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe review provides an update on the diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE).Recent FindingsDiagnostic challenges exist in better defining CLE as an independent disease distinct from systemic lupus erythematosus with cutaneous features and further classifying CLE based on clinical, histological, and laboratory features. Recent mechanistic studies revealed more genetic variations, environmental triggers, and immunologic dysfunctions that are associated with CLE. Drug induction specifically has emerged as one of the most important triggers for CLE. Treatment opti...

DISCUSSION: Our case highlights how DIL should be on the differential when seemingly disparate symptoms develop in a patient receiving DIL-associated medications. Lupus is one of the "great imitators," in which symptoms can be ascribed to many different underlying causes. Although this patient's presentation may have been confounded by concomitant histoplasmosis, his improvement with cessation of hydralazine treatment argues in favor of DIL. His continued atypical serologic test results could be residual from his DIL and should normalize with time. However, it raises the question whether this bout of DIL has unma...

Verruciform Xanthoma (VX) is a benign condition occurring primarily in the oral cavity with some lesions also found on the genital mucosa or skin. VX occurs primarily in the fifth decade of life and shows a slight male predilection. This lesion generally presents as a papillary or rough-surfaced, painless, well-demarcated lesion, ranging from white, yellow-white, to orange in color. The etiology of VX is still largely unknown and definitive diagnosis is made based on histology. This lesion is thought to correlate with localized trauma or chronic inflammatory conditions such as lichen planus, lupus, epithelial dysplasia, pe...

Conclusions The clinical trials discussed here, which include several trials investigating novel therapeutic targets, demonstrate that translational research in pemphigus and pemphigoid is a fast-growing field. We thus expect that several novel treatments will be shortly available for the treatment of pemphigus and pemphigoid patients. Given the high, and thus far unmet, medical need in this field (110), this is highly encouraging and will hopefully improve the quality of life of the affected patients. In addition to the compounds and targets described here, several new targets have been recently identified in preclinical...

Feller, Liviu / Ballyram, Raoul / Khammissa, Razia AG / Altini, Mario / Lemmer, JohanPage 177 - 182Pemphigus vulgaris, mucosal pemphigoid (mucous membrane pemphigoid), lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus and erythema multiforme are a group of immune-mediated mucocutaneous disorders characterised clinically by the formation of blisters, erosions or ulcers. The oral mucosa is often affected, and sometimes the disease is limited to the mouth. The target antigens, autoreactive immune responses, microscopic features, treatment and prognosis vary from one disease to the other. Treatment aims to eliminate exogenous risk fa...
