Conclusions: The ophthalmologist should suspect syphilis in patien ts with uveitis or optic neuropathy associated with high-risk sexual behaviour and/or HIV, or in patients with posterior placoid chorioretinitis, necrotising retinitis, or interstitial keratitis.
