Diabetes control in Asian Americans — Disparities and the role of acculturation

Asian Americans (AA) are more likely to develop diabetes (DM) [1] and its complications than non-Hispanic whites (whites) [2]. Racial/ethnic minorities such as non-Hispanic blacks and Hispanics with DM were less likely to achieve the recommended goals for glycemic, cholesterol and blood pressure (BP), collectively known as ‘ABCs of DM’, than whites [3]; however, less is known on DM control in AA with diagnosed DM. Acculturation has been associated with improved health service unitization, disease screening and management practices, and may be related to better DM control [4,5].
