Pediatric tracheal injuries: Report on 5 cases with special view on the role of bronchoscopy and management

Diagnosing potentially life-threating trachea injuries is usually troublesome as they are often part of a polytrauma scenario [1]. Symptoms related to this injury include pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, respiratory difficulties, hoarseness, rattled breathing and haemoptoe. The purpose of the study was to analyze the role of bronchoscopy in patients where non-foreign body tracheal injury occurred.

Conclusion: Combined minimally invasive VATS fissure stapling with bronchoscopic valve placement to induce lobar atelectasis appears safe and feasible in the swine model. Future research in humans using a combined procedure is needed to confirm safety and clinical efficacy.

We present the use of three-dimensional navigation to instill autologous blood into emphysematous bullae for BLVR. A 62-year-old man presented with increasing dyspnea, due to emphysema with a conglomerate of giant bullae with two particularly large bullae.
