Oral glucose tolerance test results in early pregnancy: A Finnish population-based cohort study

Gestational diabetes (GDM), definedas diabetes detected at any time in pregnancy excluding overt diabetes, affects 2-25% of pregnancies depending on population characteristics and criteria used [1,2]. In the mother, GDM indicates a 7-fold increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes after pregnancy [3]. In the foetus, GDM may lead to perinatal complications like foetal overgrowth [4] and increased cardiometabolic morbidity in later life [5]. The likelihood of adverse pregnancy outcomes increases with worsening maternal glycaemia, without a clear inflection point [6], and can be reduced with treatment [7].
