Method for the accurate determination of the DNA protection factor of sun protection products.
This study addresses an important issue in skin photoprotection: the prevention of the accumulation of DNA damage. Solar UV radiation is readily absorbed by DNA and triggers the formation of dimeric pyrimidine photoproducts such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). One purpose of sun protection products is to decrease the biological consequences of overexposure to sunlight and in particular prevent the formation of mutagenic CPDs1 which play major roles in the initiation of skin tumors.
