Incidence, Predictors, and Impact on Survival of Long-term Cardiovascular Events After Liver Transplantation

Conclusions: Age, male gender, cardiovascular disease before LT, and cyclosporine A were associated with the risk of long-term CVE. The impact of serum creatinine was restricted to patients with pre-LT cardiovascular disease. In these patients, preservation of kidney function early after LT may lessen the incidence of CVE, which are an independent predictor of post-LT death.

Infertility caused by chemotherapy or radiation treatments negatively impacts patient-survivor quality of life. The only fertility preservation option available to prepubertal boys who are not making sperm is cryopreservation of testicular tissues that contain spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) with potential to produce sperm and/or restore fertility. SSC transplantation to regenerate spermatogenesis in infertile adult survivors of childhood cancers is a mature technology. However, the number of SSCs obtained in a biopsy of a prepubertal testis may be small. Therefore, methods to expand SSC numbers in culture before transpla...

In your opinion, what are the best 10 or 15 programs in the country for IR training? I’m not looking for some silly “top ranked” list, but I thought a list of places that provide well rounded training, have a broad scope (transplant, PAD, aortas) etc would be beneficial to future applicants. From interviews and speaking to attendings and fellows, the places with the most well rounded training seem to be (in no particular order): UCSF Kaiser MD Anderson Rush Northwestern MCW Michigan MIR... In most cell therapies, the transplanted cells do not survive for long, or in large numbers. They produce beneficial effects, such as reduced inflammation or enhanced regeneration, via signaling that changes the behavior of native cell populations. Considerable effort is going into finding ways to make cells used in therapy survive for a longer period of time following transplantation. The approach taken here is to engineer a fraction of the transplanted cells to produce a growth factor that improves the survival of the others. The results are demonstrated in an animal model, showing a greater regeneration of heart muscle....

In humans, almost 50% of all intrahepatic lymphocytes are NK cells that are strongly imprinted in a liver-specific manner and show a broad spectrum of cellular heterogeneity. Hepatic NK (he-NK) cells play key roles in tuning liver immune response in b...

Conclusions: Pre-transplantation plasmatic miR-155-5p expression may be useful for stratifying low-immunologic-risk patients, and post-transplantation miR-181a-5p and miR-155-5p may be candidates for inclusion in early, non-invasive prognostic biomarker panels to prevent TCMAR or SCR and better identify patient candidates for IS minimization. Large prospective randomized multicenter trials are needed to refine the cut-off values and algorithms and validate the clinical usefulness of these biomarkers. Introduction Despite great advances in immunosuppressive (IS) therapy, T cell-mediated rejection (TCMAR), which is the...
