Publication date: Available online 4 February 2020Source: Indian Heart JournalAuthor(s): jain Dharmendra, Sunil Kumar Rao, Dhilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Bhupendra Kumar SihagSevere acute malnutrition (SAM) may affect cardiac structure & function. Cardiac changes in sick SAM children have received little attention in literature. Children aged 6 to 60 months with SAM were cases, and age & sex matched children were controls. Cardiac biomarkers levels were measured by quantitative ELISA method & echocardiography was used to assess cardiac changes in all children. Study included 76 children in each group. SAM children had less left ventricular mass & increased myocardial performance index as compared to controls (p<0.0001). Cardiac biomarkers were increased in SAM children (p<0.0001). Cardiac changes & biomarkers were comparable in edematous & non-edematous children except CK-MB (p=0.01).
