Socioeconomic differences and lung cancer survival in Germany: Investigation based on population-based clinical cancer registration

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death globally, accounting for approximately 1.76 million deaths in 2018. [1] Prognosis used to be generally very poor, with 5-year survival rates ranging between 10 and 20 % in different countries [2]. Numerous prognostic factors have been investigated which include tumor-related but also patient-related factors, as well as smoking status and cancer treatment [3]. For example, a later stage at diagnosis, male gender and current smoking at diagnosis have been shown to predict particularly poor prognosis in lung cancer patients.
