Acute Aortic Dissection —Refining Contemporary Outcomes With the Penn Classification for This Aortic Emergency

Acute aortic dissections can be life-threatening emergencies.1 These aortic emergencies historically were categorized by extent according to the DeBakey classification.1,2 According to this classification, type I dissections involve the entire thoracic aorta, whereas type II dissections are limited to the ascending aorta, and type III dissections to the descending thoracic aorta.1,2 The subsequent Stanford classification highlighted that acute dissections of the ascending aorta merit urgent surgical intervention, including streamlined triage to the operating room.
