Women’s Health Initiative Publishes New Comprehensive Results from Hormone Therapy Trials
Follow up of study participants now extends to 13 years; Results will inform clinical decision making
Objective: To gain insight into the mixed results of reported combination therapy studies conducted with levothyroxine (LT4) and liothyronine (LT3) between 1999 and 2016.Methods: We defined trial success as improved clinical outcome measures and/or patient preference for added LT3. We hypothesized that success depends strongly on residual thyroid function (RTF) as well as the LT3 added to sufficient LT4 dosing to normalize serum T4 and TSH, all rendering T3 levels to at least middle-normal range. The THYROSIM app was used to simulate “what-if” experiments in patients and study designs corresponding to the study...
ConclusionsNon-tissue diagnosis of prostate cancer, while rare, is not outside normal clinical practice and is strongly associated with advanced patient age, higher clinical stage, multiple comorbidities, and very high PSA levels.
Conclusions: Use of the 21-gene rs assay could be a cost-effective strategy for Ontario patients with estrogen receptor-positive, her2-negative early bca and 1-3 positive lns. PMID: 31708649 [PubMed - in process]
(European School of Oncology) Patients with advanced breast cancer that has spread to the skin are likely to cause more harm than good if they use complementary therapies to treat their skin lesions. Professor Maria Jo ã o Cardoso told the Advanced Breast Cancer Fifth International Consensus Conference (ABC5) in Lisbon that there was a long list of herbal products and creams that patients often try, but many of them could delay wound healing and interfere with systemic anti-cancer treatments such as hormone therapy or chemotherapy.
ConclusionsThe study observed poor effectiveness of topiramate therapy, which is partially due to a long treatment lag and a high proportion of structural etiology.

CONCLUSIONS: Well-established EC risk factors may have less discriminatory accuracy in high-risk populations. Future analyses will integrate risk factor assessment with biomarker testing for EC detection. PMID: 31718832 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
ConclusionCombined HDR-B/EBRT for the treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer provides superb clinical outcomes with excellent 5-year bRFS, dMFS, OS, and late GI/GU toxicity rates.
CONCLUSIONS: In the Greek cohort of GeNeSIS, GHD is the most frequent indication for GH treatment, followed by TS. While the latter is diagnosed somewhat earlier, GH treatment is not as efficacious as for patients with GHD. No major safety issues were reported during follow-up. The results, which are in accordance with the international literature, should be interpreted in the context of observational studies. PMID: 31696446 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Abstract The development of targeted therapies has been a consistent goal for hormone-related diseases treatment. As a result of increased knowledge of the role of androgens in different diseases, anti-androgen treatment is becoming increasingly important in targeted therapy. Androgens play an important role in different disorders, therefore, androgen receptor signalling is a crucial factor in pathological conditions. The androgen receptor is a transcription factor activated by the testosterone metabolite 5α-dihydrotestosterone and regulates the expression of genes related to sexual differentiation, growth a...
