Biorobotic Hybrid Heart to Help Develop New Cardiac Implants

Prosthetic heart valves, ventricular assist devices, and other cardiac implants go through an extensive research and development process, followed by testing on animals before human trials. There is no machine that simulates the function of the heart...

Authors: Liu Y, Jiang B, Cao Y, Chen W, Yin L, Xu Y, Qiu Z Abstract Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease that can lead to heart expansion and severe heart failure, but the specific pathogenesis remains unclear. Sox5 is a member of the Sox family with a key role in cardiac function. However, the role of Sox5 in DCM remains unclear. In the present study, wild‑type mice were intraperitoneally injected with doxorubicin (Dox) to induce DCM, and heart specimens from human patients with DCM were used to investigate the preliminary role of Sox5 in DCM. The present study demonstrated that, compared with control human...

Authors: Lyketsos CG Abstract Over 40 million people worldwide suffer from dementia. This number is projected to exceed 110 million by 2050 because of the aging of the worldwide population, especially in lower- and middle-income countries. The most common cause of dementia is believed to be Alzheimer's, a brain disease associated with deposition of beta-amyloid protein and hyperphosphorylation of intraneuronal tau protein leading to synaptic degradation, neuronal loss, brain circuit disruption, a range of symptoms, and eventually, if the person lives long enough, death. Over the last few decades, treatment developm...

CONCLUSIONS: Better staff training focused on care bundles preventing infections, better medical training focused on less efforts for CVC insertion, and the use of Ultrasounds during the CVC insertion may be the main factors that can lead to lower CLABSI rates in obese patients. Further research relating CLABSI rates in ICU patients and obesity is needed. PMID: 32468303 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Vlamou E, Papadopoulos B, Plerou A Abstract Fuzzy logic is an innovative scientific field with several successful applications. Genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic systems fusion provide real-world problems modeling through the development of intelligent and adaptive systems. Moreover, the statistical analysis of the epidemiology of infectious diseases, which combines fuzzy logic aspects, is vital for perceiving their evolution and control potential. Author's objective is initially to provide a review of the efficiency of fuzzy logic applications. The advanced implementation of fuzzy logic theory in epidemi...

Authors: Vegas-Sánchez-Ferrero G, José Estépar RS Abstract Lung parenchyma destruction (emphysema) is a major factor in the description of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and its prognosis. It is defined as an abnormal enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles and the destruction of alveolar walls. In CT imaging, the presence of emphysema is observed by a local decrease of the lung density and the diagnose is usually set as more than 5% of the lung below -950 HU, the so-called emphysema density mask. There is still debate, however, about the definition of this pe...

The objective of the study was to design, fabricate, and investigate the effectiveness of microneedle ocular patch (MOP) in delivering the model drug, pilocarpine HCl across the corneal membrane. Methods: MOP mimicked commercially available contact lens design elements having a diameter of 14.20 mm and a sagittal height of 3.85 mm with a convex curvature. The base of this patch contained an array of 25 pyramid-shaped microneedles measuring 521 ± 10 µm in length. Pilocarpine loaded MOP was prepared by micromolding technique using dissolvable polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl pyrrolidone...

In this study, mushroom residue was adding in lead-zinc slag to enhance the phytoremediation potential of P. fortunei, the effects of three treatments (lead-zinc slag, red soil, lead-zinc slag + 10% (m/m) mushroom residue) on the growth, physiology and microstructure of P. fortunei were determined. The results showed that the addition of mushroom residue increased the biomass, plant height and chlorophyll concentration of P. fortunei, indicating that the addition of mushroom residue can facilitate the growth of P. fortunei. Moreover, the proportions of oxalate-Pb forms and phosphate-Zn were do...
