Viruses, Vol. 12, Pages 160: Host Transcription Factors in Hepatitis B Virus RNA Synthesis Viruses doi: 10.3390/v12020160 Authors: Turton Meier-Stephenson Badmalia Coffin Patel The hepatitis B virus (HBV) chronically infects over 250 million people worldwide and is one of the leading causes of liver cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV persistence is due in part to the highly stable HBV minichromosome or HBV covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) that resides in the nucleus. As HBV replication requires the help of host transcription factors to replicate, focusing on host protein–HBV genome interactions may reveal insights into new drug targets against cccDNA. The structural details on such complexes, however, remain poorly defined. In this review, the current literature regarding host transcription factors’ interactions with HBV cccDNA is discussed.

ConclusionsElderliness, male sex, elevated ALT, AST, NLR, AFP, cirrhosis, HBeAg+, and no ‐antiviral treatment were independent risk factors for HBV‐HCC. AASLD standard of ALT cut‐off value may not be suitable for the Chinese population. Regular monitoring of HCC among HBeAg‐ patients with abnormal AFP may improve the management of HBV ‐HCC. The diagnostic performance of AFP combined with ALT, AST, and NLR for HBV‐HCC was superior to single biomarker or any other combinations among these patients, and its diagnostic equation can be used as useful tool for differentiation of HBV‐HCC from CHB.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.1 The primary risk factors for HCC include chronic hepatitis B and C viral infections, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related liver diseases (ALD). While recent clinical advances have considerably improved the management of HBV/HCV-driven liver diseases, both NAFLD and ALD are expected to increase the global burden of HCC significantly.1 Though NAFLD and ALD share similar histological features, ALD is the main cause of liver-related mortality worldwide.
