Perioperative Dextrose and Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

For some patients, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) seems to be immutably linked to the anesthetic experience. Perianesthesia nurses constantly seek ways to prevent, control, and treat patients who suffer from this event. A group of researchers representing Columbia, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Yale School of Medicine, and The Johns Hopkins University conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the efficacy of dextrose infusions on PONV outcomes. Their conclusions provide new information for perianesthesia nurses to consider when advocating for patients.
