Effect of Ventricular Pacing on Morbidity in Adults After Fontan Repair

The Fontan is the final circulatory destination for palliation of complex congenital heart defects when anatomy precludes a two-ventricle repair. Advances in surgical technique and post-operative management have been accompanied by improved early survival,1-3 but late morbidity and mortality remains high with 20-year survival estimated between 60%-80%.4-7 Bradycardia necessitates permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation in 6-39% of Fontan patients,8-14 with atrioventricular block as the indication in 20-50% of cases.
