Is Emotional Intelligence an Important Trait for Nurse Managers and Leaders?

It has been suggested by Tyczkowski and colleagues1 that stress and lack of support for the role of nurse managers are among the reasons that less than 12.5% of nurses aspire to leadership roles. 1 They suggest that the trait of resiliency enables one to adapt to adversity, and tension is integral to an effective nurse manager and is a predictor of a manager ’s success. As health care becomes more complex and continues to evolve, the skills, knowledge, and behaviors of nurse managers must also evolve.
