EP News: Basic and Translational

This is a prospective study by Lebek et  al (Circ Res, doi:10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.119.315755; PMID 31902278) to directly assess the effects of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) on the Na+ current (INa) and atrial proarrhythmic activity in patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). The investigators enrolled 113 patien ts undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting. The presence of SDB was determined before surgery. Patients with SDB (n = 57) show a significantly increased level of activated CaMKII in the right atrial appendage biopsies compared with patients without SDB.
