Methodological issues regarding: “A third of nonfasting plasma cholesterol is in remnant lipoproteins: Lipoprotein subclass profiling in 9293 individuals”

We read with great interest the recent article by Balling et al. [1] on lipoprotein subclass profiling in 9293 individuals with mean triglycerides of 1.8 mmol/L concluding that “using direct measurements, one-third of total cholesterol in plasma was present in remnant lipoproteins”. Although we agree with the larger point that remnant cholesterol may contribute significantly to the residual risk of cardiovascular disease, we believe that the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy measurements performed for this paper using the Nightingale Health platform (https://nightingalehealth.com/publications) led to an overestimation of remnant cholesterol and the incorrect finding that remnant lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) carry comparable amounts of cholesterol.
