Clinical characteristics and awareness of skin cancer in Hispanic patients.

Clinical characteristics and awareness of skin cancer in Hispanic patients. Dermatol Online J. 2013;19(9):19623 Authors: Javed S, Javed SA, Mays RM, Tyring SK Abstract Skin cancer in darker skin is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. We sought to assess the clinical characteristics of cutaneous malignancy amongst Hispanic skin cancer patients and compare them to age-matched non-Hispanic Caucasians. In this retrospective study, 150 Hispanic skin cancer patients were identified from electronic medical records and age-matched to 150 non-Hispanic Caucasian controls with skin cancer. The incidence of actinic keratoses (AKs) in Hispanic skin cancer patients (34.0%) was statistically lower than age-matched non-Hispanic Caucasian skin cancer controls (61.3%, P

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of high-LET carbon ions and low-LET X-rays on the expression of VEGF and MMPs, and to identify the associated mechanisms in the Tca8113 TSCC cell line. Tca8113 cells were irradiated with carbon ions or X-rays at doses of 1 and 4 Gy. An immunofluorescence assay indicated that VEGF expression was notably decreased at 24 and 48 h after heavy ion irradiation compared with irradiation with conventional X-rays. The expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 also decreased in a dose-dependent manner following heavy ion irradiation. These findings indicate that compared with low...

ConclusionsAge at diagnosis of temporal bone cancer is strongly associated with the prevalence of temporal bone cancer. We urge providers to consider subtypes of temporal bone cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, when evaluating older adults with risk factors for temporal bone cancer and an abnormal physical exam.

ConclusionsThe combination of belinostat 2000  mg/m2 days 1 –5 and 13-cRA 100 mg/m2 days 1 –14, every 21 days, was well-tolerated and an MTD was not reached despite doubling the established single-agent MTD of belinostat.

This study investigates the performance of label-free, reflectance-based hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and autofluorescence imaging for SCC detection at the cancer margin in excised tissue specimens from 102 patients and uses fluorescent dyes for comparison. Fresh surgical specimens (n = 293) were collected during H and N SCC resections (n = 102). The tissue specimens were imaged with reflectance-based HSI and autofluorescence imaging and afterwards with two fluorescent dyes for comparison. A histopathological ground truth was made. Deep learning tools were developed to detect SCC with new patient samples (inter-patient) and...

tto M Abstract INTRODUCTION: the goal of this study was to evaluate if there is an association between dietary components related to inflammation processes and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in Argentina. METHODS: case-control study 3:1, both genders, ages 24-80 years attended at External Offices of Facultad Odontología Universidad Nacional de Córdoba between 2012 and 2015. Dietary information was collected using a qualitative-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was applied. Logistic regression was applied in order to assess the association among ...

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a deadly disease that comprises 60% of all head and neck squamous cell cancers. The leaves of the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) have been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat numerous oral maladies and are known to have significant anti-inflammatory properties. We hypothesize that a highly pure super critical CO2 Neem leaf extract (SCNE) prevents initiation and progression of OSCC via downregulation of intra-tumor pro-inflammatory pathways, which promote tumorigenesis. Hence, we investigated the anticancer effects of SCNE using in vitro and in vivo platforms....

Spread through air spaces (STAS) is a hype and assumed to be another way for tumor cells to permeate lung parenchyma beyond classical invasion criteria (stroma, patterning and lymphovascular spaces) [1], which is increasingly described at the growing edges of adenocarcinoma [2,3], squamous cell carcinoma [4], sarcomatoid carcinoma [5] and neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms [6,7], with worrisome implications for tumor recurrence, reduced survival and parenchyma-sparing resections [8 –11]. STAS was officially introduced in the 2015 World Health Organization classification for adenocarcinoma [1], but aerogenous spread as a s...

Authors: Tsunoda M, Miura Y, Osawa H, Khurelbaatar T, Sakaguchi M, Fukuda H, Lefor AK, Yamamoto H Abstract A 62-year-old man with a flat early esophageal cancer was referred for endoscopic treatment. White light imaging revealed a pale red lesion, whereas linked color imaging (LCI) and blue laser imaging (BLI) yielded purple and brown images, respectively. Iodine staining demonstrated a large unstained area with a homogenous but very weak pink-color sign. This area appeared more clearly as purple and green on LCI and BLI, respectively; however, a different colored portion was observed at the 4 o'clock position insi...
