One of the most celebrated attributes of palliative care (PC) is its interdisciplinary nature. PC teams often include providers from an array of disciplines, including medicine, nursing, social work, pharmacy, and pastoral care. There is little doubt that patients and families facing serious illness benefit from a comprehensive and collaborative approach that employs a broad range of knowledge and skill sets. Yet the same diversity that renders PC so effective for patients may create challenges in maintaining healthy, integrated, and efficient PC teams.
