Creation and Implementation of a Palliative Sedation Policy: Foundational Aspects and Lessons Learned (QI610)

The goal of palliative care is to provide optimal quality of life for persons with serious illnesses. Nearing end of life, refractory physical symptoms are devastating. These are associated with complicated grieving, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and staff compassion fatigue. In some cases, PS is appropriate but no such PS policy existed for our palliative care team and local VHA facility.
