Nocardial brain abscess mimicking lung cancer metastasis in immunocompetent patient with pulmonary nocardiasis: a case report.

We present a case where nocardial abscesses of lung and brain were initially suspected as lung cancer with brain metastases. The patient was treated with a combination of surgical resection and antimicrobial therapy with good outcome. PMID: 31969769 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: The study demonstrated PD-L1 expression in ~ 1/3rd cases of NSCLC patients. No or very weak correlation was observed for PD-L1 expression with genetic mutations and other parameters studied. The presence of gene mutations in PD-L1 expressed samples suggests further investigation on PD-L1 inhibitors in such patients for decisive treatments.

Metastatic tumors are the most common malignancies of the central nervous system (CNS) in adults. CNS metastases are associated with unfavorable prognosis, high morbidity and mortality. Lung cancer is the most common source of brain metastases, followed by breast cancer and melanoma. Rising incidence is primarily due to improvements in systemic control of primary malignancies, prolonged survival and advances in cancer detection.

AbstractBackgroundPrevious studies have identified that patients withEGFR mutations tend to have better responses to targeted therapy, as well as chemotherapy; however, the effect of genetic alterations in terms of radiotherapy (RT) ‐related outcomes has not been fully assessed. We studied the impact of common non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) genetic alterations (EGFR,ALK andKRAS) in relation to objective response rate (ORR) to RT in patients with brain metastases.MethodsFrom 2009 –2015, 153 patients with an available genotyping status were treated with whole‐brain irradiation (WBI) before receiving systemic ...

Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Published online: 20 February 2020; doi:10.1038/s41571-019-0320-3Brain metastases are a frequent manifestation of several common solid tumour types, including lung cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. Although the presence of brain-metastatic disease continues to be associated with poor outcomes, advances in surgery, radiotherapy and systemic therapies that can permeate the blood–brain barrier are beginning to improve patient outcomes. In this Review, the authors provide an overview of contemporary advances in the management of brain metastases over the past decade.

CONCLUSIONS: For brain cancer patients, HCMV-reactivation after the start of radiochemotherapy is a frequent risk for cognitively detrimental but treatable encephalopathy and premature death. Routinely performed HCMV-diagnostics, assessing basophil counts and study-based anti-viral regimens are necessary to combat this hidden threat. PMID: 32060103 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In conclusion, the concept of an epigenetic clock is compelling, but caution should be taken in interpreting associations with age acceleration. Association tests of age acceleration should include age as a covariate. A Discussion of Recent Work on Allotopic Expression of Mitochondrial Genes at the SENS Research Foundation A paper published last month outlines recent progress on allotopic expression of mitochondrial genes carried out by the SENS Research ...
