Authors: Wu JT, Lin CL, Huang CJ, Cheng YC, Chien CC, Sung YC Abstract Thyroid cancer is the most commonly diagnosed endocrine cancer. Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is the most aggressive type of thyroid cancer and has a poor prognosis. Loss of p53 function has been reported to lead to poorly differentiated thyroid tumors; therefore, mutant p53 protein can be considered a crucial therapeutic target in patients with ATC. Sorafenib, a multi-kinase inhibitor, has been approved for the treatment of metastatic and differentiated thyroid cancer. Combined targeted therapy, including sorafenib, may be clinically signific...

Authors: Li X, Liu C, Zhao X, Wang R, Gu N, Shen H, Li X, Wang L, Li C Abstract Effects of CDK6 regulated by miR-298 on proliferation and apoptosis of thyroid cancer cells were explored. Seventy-five cases of thyroid carcinoma and adjacent tissues were collected. The expression levels of miR-298 and CDK6 mRNA in tissues and cells were detected by RT-PCR. In addition, thyroid cancer cells and human normal thyroid cells Nthy-ori3-1 were purchased, with the former transfected with miR-298-mimics, miR-298-inhibitor, miR-NC, si-CDK6, si-NC, Sh-CDK6, Sh-NC to build cell models. Then the expression levels of miR-298 and C...

We present the case of a patient with a large, partially cystic intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma which was initially identified as a malignant thyroid nodule. We discuss the caveats that present in these rare cases and the important clinical and histological features that aid in the final diagnosis. In the case of our patient the cytological similarities between thyroid malignant cells and parathyroid cells, in combination with the negative sestamibi scan, resulted in a more invasive surgery than that a single parathyroid adenoma would require. Clinicians need to be vigilant in terms of the similarities between parathyro...

Authors: Cabanillas M, Dadu R, Iyer PC, Wanland KB, Busaidy N, Ying AK, Gule-Monroe M, Wang JR, Zafereo M, Hofmann MC Abstract The BRAFV600E mutation is the most common driver mutation in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC). This mutation is considered actionable and, for BRAFV600E-mutated ATC, a BRAF inhibitor (dabrafenib) in combination with a MEK inhibitor (trametinib) is FDA approved. BRAF inhibitors have also shown efficacy in BRAFV600E-mutated PTC. However, as with all targeted therapies, resistance to these drugs eventually occurs. It is essential that we understand the mechani...

AbstractWe aimed to examine whether golgi protein GOLPH3 could affect the secretion of glioma cell-derived exosomes. The exosomes were extracted by ultra-centrifugation from the supernatant of U251 and U87 cell cultures and identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Malvern analyzer, and western blot. The quantity of exosomes was examined by measuring the total protein levels and the number of multiple vesicle bodies (MVBs), the source of exosomes. The exosome miRNAs were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing followed by GO and KEGG analysis, and validated by qRT-PCR. GOLPH3 could not affect the total protein l...

Authors: Quaglino F, Manfrino L, Cestino L, Giusti M, Mazza E, Piovesan A, Palestini N, Lauro C, Castellano E Abstract Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare disease responsible for about 1% of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) cases. PC usually has an indolent course, tough to differentiate from the benign causes of PHPT, and the only certain diagnosis is histologic. The gold standard surgical treatment is the en bloc resection associated with the homolateral thyroid loboistmectomy. The aim of this study was to underline the main differences between PC and benign PHPT, along with gathering epidemiological knowledge...

Mitchell, Wei Jun Pang, Jiang Wei Wu Obesity leads to multiple health problems, including diabetes, fatty liver, and even cancer. Here, we report that urolithin A (UA), a gut-microflora–derived metabolite of pomegranate ellagitannins (ETs), prevents diet-induced obesity and metabolic dysfunctions in mice without causing adverse eff ects. UA treatment increases energy expenditure (EE) by enhancing thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and inducing browning of white adipose tissue (WAT). Mecha...

This study was designed to assess the possible relationships between CV abnormalities and cancer among RA/PsA/AS patients. Between March 2014 and March 2015, 414 patients (214 RA, 125 PsA, and 75 SA) in sinus rhythm without known cardiac disease underwent clinical and color Doppler echocardiographic evaluation and were prospectively followed up. Patients had a mean age of 58  ± 12 years, 64% women. Forty-two patients (10.1%) had a diagnosis of cancer (made before enrollment in 24 cases and in 18 cases during the 36 months of follow-up). Skin cancer was the most frequent malignancy found, foll...
