Association between phospholipid metabolism in plasma and spontaneous preterm birth: a discovery lipidomic analysis in the cork pregnancy cohort

This study aimed to decipher the lipidomics pathways involved in pathophysiology of sPTB.MethodsBlood samples were taken from SCreening fOr Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE), an international study that recruited 5628 nulliparous women, with a singleton low-risk pregnancy. Our analysis focused on plasma from SCOPE in Cork. Discovery profiling of the samples was undertaken using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry Lipidomics, and features significantly altered between sPTB (n  = 16) and Control (n = 32) groups were identified using empirical Bayes testing, adjusting for multiple comparisons.ResultsTwenty-six lipids showed lower levels in plasma of sPTB compared to controls (adjusted p

Eastwood, Gillian RhodesAbstractEvolutionary theories suggest that humans prefer sexual dimorphism in faces because masculinity in men and femininity in women may be an indicator of immune function during development. In particular, the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis proposes that sexual dimorphism indicates good immune function during development because the sex hormones, particularly testosterone in men, required for the development of sexually...

This study aims to compare the clinical course of peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) cohorts from Germany (G ‐PPCM) and South Africa (SA‐PPCM) with fibrosis‐related markers to get insights into novel pathomechanisms of PPCM.Methods and resultsG ‐PPCM (n = 79) and SA ‐PPCM (n = 72) patients and healthy pregnancy ‐matched women from Germany (n = 56) and South Africa (n = 40) were enrolled. Circulating levels of procollagen type ‐I (PINP) and type‐III (PIIINP) N‐terminal propeptides, soluble ST2, galectin‐3, and full‐length and cleaved osteopontin (OPN) were measured at diagnosis (baseline) and 6 months of...

Discussion Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a problem of the neuromuscular junction which causes muscle weakness. It can occur in all ages and have a range of symptoms from mild localized disease to mortality-threatening respiratory failure. MG occurs in 1.7-30 cases/million, with a prevalence of 77.7 cases/million. Pediatric patients comprise 10-15% of all patients with MG. In various Asian populations, the juvenile MG can be up to 50% of all of the MG cases. Fluctuations in muscle weakness is a hallmark of the disease. As a reminder, “[i]n normal synaptic transmission in the neuromuscular junction, the axon is depolarize...

AbstractPerinatal depression is the most common complication of pregnancy and affects the mother, fetus, and infant. Recent preclinical studies and a limited number of clinical studies have suggested an influence of the gut microbiome on the onset and course of mental health disorders. In this review, we examine the current state of knowledge regarding genetics, epigenetics, heritability, and neuro-immuno-endocrine systems biology in perinatal mood disorders, with a particular focus on the interaction between these factors and the gut microbiome, which is mediated via the gut-brain axis. We also provide an overview of expe...
