Hydrogen Peroxide-Generating Electrochemical Scaffold Activity against Tri-Species Biofilms.

Hydrogen Peroxide-Generating Electrochemical Scaffold Activity against Tri-Species Biofilms. Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2020 Jan 21;: Authors: Raval YS, Mohamed A, Song J, Greenwood-Quaintance KE, Beyenal H, Patel R Abstract The anti-biofilm activity of an H2O2-generating electrochemical scaffold (e-scaffold) was determined against mono- and tri-species biofilms of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans Significant time-dependent decreases were found in the overall colony-forming units (CFU) of biofilms of all three mono- as well as the tri-species forms. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) showed dramatic reductions in fluorescence intensities of biofilm matrix protein and polysaccharide components of e-scaffold-treated biofilms. The described e-scaffold has potential as a novel antibiotic-free strategy for treating wound biofilms. PMID: 31964793 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: These results is very important to highlight hygienic status of paper currencies. This can be considered as an indication that banknotes may contribute to the spread of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, we may need to start using alternative products instead of banknotes. PMID: 32066229 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate selection of empirical antimicrobial therapy should be guided by the ICU-specific antibiogram. The recommended empirical antimicrobial therapy at the CMJAH ICU/HCU based on the antibiogram analysis would include ertapenem to cover the Enterobacteriaceae. Amikacin is recommended for empirical treatment of suspected pseudomonal infections. Additional empirical antimicrobial therapy for Gram-positive organisms is not routinely advocated, and empirical antifungal therapy with amphotericin B or micafungin is only appropriate in patients at high risk for invasive candidiasis. DonskeyPortable equipment and other small devices used in health care are a potential source for dissemination of pathogens. We demonstrated that a high-level disinfection cabinet using ultrasonic submicron droplets of peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide was effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridiodes difficile spores, the nonenveloped virus bacteriophage MS2, and Candida auris on steel disk carriers. The device also ...

Synthesis, in vitro biological evaluation and in silico molecular docking studies of novel β-lactam-anthraquinone hybrids. Bioorg Chem. 2019 Dec 17;95:103515 Authors: Mohamadzadeh M, Zarei M, Vessal M Abstract Schiff bases from 2-aminoanthraquinone have been prepared by reaction with aldehydes and used to prepare novel β-lactam-anthraquinone hybrids via [2+2] ketene-imine cycloaddition (Staudinger reaction) reaction. In vitro antibacterial studies of all synthesized compound were carried out against three gram-positive strains Staphylococcus aureus (Methicillin-resistant strain), Enterococcu...

ecka Milewski The development and spread of resistance of human pathogenic bacteria to the action of commonly used antibacterial drugs is one of the key problems in modern medicine. One of the especially dangerous and easily developing antibiotic resistant bacterial species is Staphylococcus aureus. Anthra[1,2-d][1,2,3]triazine-4,7,12(3H)-triones 22–38 have been developed as novel effective antistaphylococcal agents. These compounds have been obtained by sequential conversion of 1-amino-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2-carboxylic acid (1) and 1-amino-4-bromo-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2-carboxyli...

Objective: to study features of pulmonary complications in intravenous drug users (IDUs) with and without HIV.Materials and Methods: 149 patients (111 were males, mean age - 34,6±5,2 years)- IDUs diagnosed with pneumonia who were included in the study as they admitted to the hospital. HIV infection was verified in 112 (75%). 105 (70%) patients had viral hepatitis (B, C, B+C), 70 (47%) -tuberculosis.Results: In the presence of HIV infection, especially with severe immunosuppression of CD4+

In this study, a green synthesis approach was used to create a composite hydrogel (CoHy) of RSF stabilized with CarboxymethylCellulose-Na (CMC-Na) and loaded with AgNPs. Their swelling ratios were up to 59 g/g when tested in different physiologically relevant fluids. Material characterizations by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed the presence of AgNPs on the surface. Antimicrobial properties of the CoHy samples were evaluated using agar diffusion tests. The results showed distinct inhibition zones against major microorganisms found in...

GubaidullinAbstractA series of 34 new amine- and guanidine-functionalized derivatives of betulinic, ursolic, and oleanolic acids were synthesized and tested for their antimicrobial activity against the growth of four bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and two fungal strains (Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoforman). The obtained compounds were also tested for the cytotoxic effect against HEK29...

Abstract A crude extract prepared from a culture of marine-sourced fungus Penicillum ZZ1283 in the medium of potato dextrose broth was found to have antimicrobial activities. Chemical investigation on this active extract resulted in the isolation of eighteen metabolites, including purpuride D, a new analogue of drimane-type sesquiterpene lactones conjugated with N-acetyl-L-valine. Structure of the new purpuride D was determined based on its HRESIMS data, NMR spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ECD calculation. Purpuride D showed activities in inhibiting the growth of methicillin-resistant ...
