Evolution of perioperative quality of life in patients under enhanced recovery after surgery care in colorectal cancer.

CONCLUSIONS: in our experience, surgery under ERAS protocols did not have an impact on decreasing global QOL in patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer surgery. The use of ERAS protocols in colorectal surgery achieves a positive influence, not only by decreasing surgical-related complications but also in terms of functional recovery, by decreasing the negative effects of surgery on patient QOL. Authors: Cao M, Zhou M, Zhang J Abstract Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) beyond second line treatment have a poor prognosis. Regorafenib, TAS-102, fruquintinib, panitumumab and cetuximab are recommended single-agent chemotherapy regimens for patients exhibiting disease progression, this meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these regimens in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Eight RCTs with 3,832 cancer patients were included. Results showed that there was no significant difference in OS and PFS among the four drugs when comparing all patients or patients who have the KRAS ...

In this study, dosimeters were used to measure the testicular dose with and without testicular shielding to verify the effect of shielding. Anthropomorphic phantoms representing a human were used to estimate the doses absorbed in testicular and whole-body studies. The anthropomorphic phantom was irradiated according to the treatment protocol for colorectal cancer. Measurements were made using optically-stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLDs), composed of carbon-doped aluminum oxide, with characteristics suitable for radiotherapy dosimetry studies. A set of OSLDs was placed on a testicular phantom, attached to the lower e...

Authors: Shiroma PR, Velasquez T, Usset TJ, Wilhelm JH, Thuras P, Baltutis E Abstract INTRODUCTION: Obesity is prevalent among users of Veteran's Health Administration services, where it is comorbid with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, colon, and breast cancer. Among obese subjects, severe obesity represents a subpopulation with the highest risk of depression. We investigate the antidepressant effect of a local VA weight management program (Managing Overweight Veterans Everywhere - MOVE) among depressed veterans with severe obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a...

Conclusions: Preoperative blood transfusion is associated with severe postoperative complications following colectomy in moderate and severe anemic cancer patients. Further studies are needed to establish an optimal preoperative transfusional cutoff value to optimize postoperative outcomes and balance clinical costs. In conclusion, our findings widen the genotypic spectrum of MLH1 mutations responsible for LS. This study increases the phenotypic spectrum of LS which will certainly help the clinicians in diagnosing LS in multigeneration families. This study also puts emphasis on the importance of genetic counselling for the benefit of asymptomatic carriers of MMR gene variants who are at higher risk of LS. PMID: 32076465 [PubMed - in process]

This article describes our thoughts on, and first experience with the development and implementation of an alternative, remote follow-up plan for colorectal cancer patients. Within remote follow-up, patients have access to test results, and are supported with self-management information. They have access to telemedicine applications such as video-consultation, text messaging, and telephone services to contact their physician and nurse practitioner. Routine outpatient clinical visits are abandoned. Currently, 66 patients are being followed remotely. Application of telemedicine within cancer follow-up has several advantages....

ConclusionUsing the obstruction protocol in patients with bowel obstruction reduced emergency surgery and postoperative morbidity and mortality in this pilot study. This protocol seems to be a viable and efficient alternative to emergency surgery.

Biological aging is characterized by e.g. mitochondrial dysfunction and epigenetic alterations (e.g. methylation) - mechanisms that are also important in cancer development. For CRC, specific types of tumors are distinguishable by their methylation patterns and several detection methods using different epigenetic marks have been developed as...
