Publication date: Available online 17 February 2020Source: MitochondrionAuthor(s): Pallavi Shukla, Srabani MukherjeeAbstractPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, hyperandrogenism and subfertility. Due to its complex manifestation, the pathogenic mechanism of PCOS is not well defined. Cumulative effect of altered genetic and epigenetic factors along with environmental factors may play a role in the manifestation of PCOS leading to systemic malfunction. With failure of genome-wide association study (GWAS) and other studies performed on nuclear genome to p...

Obesity is characterized by an excess of adipose tissue, due to adipocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ producing many bioactive molecules, called adipokines. During obesity, dysfunctional adipocytes alter adipokine secretion, contributing to pathophysiology of obesity-associated diseases, including metabolic syndrome, type 2-diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and many types of malignancies. Circulating adiponectin levels are inversely correlated with BMI, thus adiponectin concentrations are lower in obese than normal-weight subjects. Many clinical investigations highlight that low adipon...

ConclusionBoth smoking and BMI are strong risk factors for ED and affect response to ICI and penile duplex parameters (PSV, EDV, RI). Smoking and BMI together cause more deterioration of penile duplex parameters and response to ICI. The effect of smoking on EDV and RI was more than BMI. The effect of BMI on PSV, response to ICI and testosterone levels was more than smoking.
