Low pulmonary artery pulsatility index is associated with adverse outcomes in ambulatory patients with advanced heart failure

The prevalence of heart failure is increasing worldwide and up to 10% of patients progress to advanced heart failure, becoming refractory to medical therapy. 1-4 Patients with advanced heart failure frequently develop symptoms and signs of elevated right-sided filling pressures, due to congestion and right ventricular dysfunction. The syndrome of right heart failure is associated with reduced exercise tolerance, impaired quality of life and increased mortality. 5-7 Recent improvements in medical therapy have reduced rates of sudden death and more patients may therefore survive to develop progressive right heart failure.
