Public Health in the 21st Century: Too Big to Fail? (HHS Only)

Introduction by: The Honorable Kathleen Sebelius Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Presentation by: Dr. Margaret Chan Director-General World Health Organization Just since the start of this century, health challenges have become far more complex, and political leaders and the public are paying attention. Director-General Chan will discuss current trends in global health—including climate change, antimicrobial resistance, non-communicable diseases, global health security and universal health coverage, among others—and provide insight into the fruitful collaboration between the World Health Organization and the U.S. Government. Dr Margaret Chan, from the People's Republic of China, joined the Hong Kong Department of Health in 1978, where her career in public health began. In 1994, Dr. Chan was appointed Director of Health of Hong Kong—among many accomplishments there, she effectively managed outbreaks of avian influenza and of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Dr. Chan joined the World Health Organization in 2003 and was elected to the post of Director-General in November 2006. The Assembly appointed Dr. Chan for a second five-year term in May 2012. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of antibiotic use was high not only versus other hospitals in the region but globally including Africa, coupled with significant evidence of sub-optimal prescribing. Swift action is needed to improve future prescribing to reduce AMR. One or two areas should initially be targeted for quality improvement including development of local guidelines, documentation of antibiotic indications and/or stop/review dates.
