The characteristics and regularities of cardiac adverse drug reactions induced by Chinese materia medica: A bibliometric research and association rules analysis

ConclusionThe comprehensive features and risk factors of cardiac ADRs induced by oral CMMs can be discovered and elucidated through the approaches of bibliometric research, association rules analysis, and data mining technology, which raise the profile and awareness of the rational applications of CMMs and pharmacovigilance within relevant heart side effects.Graphical abstract

In this study, a targeted photothermal delivery nanoplatform (P-D-CS-CNTs) was facilely fabricated by decoration of an acidity-labile polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative onto chitosan nanoparticles encapsulating single-walled carbon nanotubes. P-D-CS-CNTs displayed a good stability in serum at normal physiological pH and convertibility of surface charges upon exposure to tumoral acidic pH, which was attributed to the acidity-triggered dePEGylation. The confocal laser scanning microscopic observations suggested that such surface-convertibility of nanoparticles facilitated tumor cell uptake, endo/lyososomal escape, and enha...

The rates of opioid overdose in the United States quadrupled between 1999 and 2017, reaching a staggering 130 deaths per day. This health epidemic demands innovative solutions that require uncovering the key brain areas and cell types mediating the cause of overdose — opioid-induced respiratory depression. Here, we identify two primary changes to murine breathing after administering opioids. These changes implicate the brainstem's breathing circuitry which we confirm by locally eliminating the µ-Opioid receptor. We find the critical brain site is the preBöt zinger Complex, where the breathing rhythm origin...

Although policy, research, and media coverage predominantly focus on opioid addiction and overdoses in younger people, older adults are also susceptible to opioid-related morbidity and mortality.1 Data suggest that all-cause opioid-related hospitalizations have increased by 34% as non –opioid-related hospitalizations have decreased by 17% among adults aged ≥65 years from 2010 to 2015.2 Yet, the contribution of opioid use disorder (OUD) to this increase and characteristics of older adults with OUD are unknown.

We read with interest the publication from Kohl et al. “Acute intentional caffeine overdose treated preemptively with hemodialysis” [1]. Caffeine toxicity causes significant adrenergic toxicity that can result in end organ damage and even mortality following massive exposures. Because the structural, physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties of caffeine are similar to theophylline [2], it is understandable that hemodialysis be considered in caffeine overdose as it would be with theophylline.
