Uric acid and estimate of renal function. Let's stick together

Hyperuricaemia refers to an abnormally high concentration of uric acid in serum [1], typically defined as>7  mg/dL (416 μmol/L) in men and>6  mg/dL in women [1]. Mean serum uric acid has increased progressively over the last century in many populations and the prevalence of hyperuricemia increases with age and is higher in men than premenopausal women [1], as oestrogen increases urate excretion by the kidneys. Hyperuricaemia is usually discussed in the context of gout, but it is increasingly recognised that serum uric acid values>5.0  mg/dL (men) or 4.5 mg/dL (postmenopausal women) are clinically relevant markers of other diseases including hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertriglyceridemia, obesity, atherosclerotic heart disease, and metabolic syndrome [1,2].

Conclusion: People who are overweight or obese are motivated to lose weight because of health issues and feeling more comfortable with their body. The opportunities for weight loss lie in creating habits, routines and structuring everyday life activities to facilitate a healthier lifestyle.Significance: The findings indicate that an occupational therapist should be part of weight-loss interventions. EvansAbstractThe ketone bodies, d-β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate, are soluble 4-carbon compounds derived principally from fatty acids, that can be metabolised by many oxidative tissues, including heart, in carbohydrate-depleted conditions as glucose-sparing energy substrates. They also have important signalling functions, acting through G-protein coupled receptors and histone deacetylases to regulate metabolism and gene expression including ...

VieiraAbstractCarbon monoxide (CO) is a gasotransmitter endogenously produced by the activity of heme oxygenase, which is a stress-response enzyme. Endogenous CO or low concentrations of exogenous CO have been described to present several cytoprotective functions: anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, vasomodulation, maintenance of homeostasis, stimulation of preconditioning and modulation of cell differentiation. The present review revises and discuss how CO r...

In this study, we investigated the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress genes in the lung tissue of obese ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized male and female rats.Main methodsThe rats were divided into eight groups (n = 5 per group) as follows: female and male rats fed with normal diet (FND and MND, respectively), female and male OVA-sensitized rats fed with normal diet (F-OND and M-OND, respectively), female and male rats fed with high-fat diet (F-HFD and M-HFD, respectively), female and male OVA-sensitized rats fed with high-fat diet (F-OHFD and M-OHFD, respectively). All rats were fed with a high-fat diet or stand...

Authors: Yang HS, Hur M, Kim H, Kim SJ, Shin S, Di Somma S, GREAT Network Abstract BACKGROUND: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a complex mixture of subclasses with heterogeneous atheroprotective activities. We analyzed HDL-C subclass in relation to cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a population with high HDL-C levels. METHODS: A total of 300 Korean individuals with high HDL-C levels (≥2.331 mmol/L) were enrolled following a comprehensive general medical examination including body composition analysis. HDL3-C levels were measured using the HDL3-EX SEIKEN kit (Randox Ltd., Cr...

Conclusions: We found a significant reduction in BMI, body weight, WC, and fat mass following administration with metformin. However, the effect of metformin on LBM was not significant. Further studies are required to confirm these findings. PMID: 32068434 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: To the authors' knowledge, there are no prospective study investigators that have addressed whether or when to cancel dental procedures due to office-measured elevated BP. The authors recommend using current anesthesiology guidelines based on functional status and past BP measurements to prevent unnecessary cancellations. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: It is seldom necessary to cancel dental procedures on the basis of BP measured before a planned procedure for patients under a physician's care. Publication date: Available online 19 February 2020Source: Surgery (Oxford)Author(s): Christopher Limb, Timothy RockallAbstractLaparoscopic surgery is currently established as the primary modality for many procedures. In has been associated with a number of benefits over traditional open surgery, including reduced pain, shorter hospital stay and quicker return to work. Despite this, significant operative challenges and the potential for life-threatening complications exist. Surgeons must understand the specialist equipment that is required, along with how to troubleshoot common issues. Furthermore, an appreciation of the d...
