AbstractGambling is a popular activity among older adults. Despite this increase in popularity little research has examined gambling among this group. This is especially true for minority older adults, like Francophones in Ontario. The purpose of this study was to better understand gambling in a sample of older Francophones from North-Eastern Ontario, the first study to do so. A sample of 181 older (over 55  years) Francophones from Northeastern Ontario (M age = 68.7, SD 7.6) was recruited. This sample was compared to a sample of older adults with English as their native language that had been previously...

CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the use of patient experiences and feedback to aide product development. In addition, post-9/11 veterans support the use of eScreening to assist health screening. However, evaluating the eScreening program in more diverse veteran groups and Veterans Affairs settings is needed to improve the generalizability of these findings to the larger veteran population. DISCUSSION: This group, comprising the mothers of young children, is particularly interesting in view of the credit constraints experienced by younger households during the financial crisis in Ireland. Both sets of results are consistent with qualitative studies which have shown that mortgage difficulties can lead to depression, anxiety and poor mental health, and that high status groups experience shame and self-blame when they experience a financial loss. It remains to be seen if this will have a long-term effect on the mental health of either the mothers or their children. PMID: 32060231 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Kolomeets NS, Uranova NA Abstract There is increasing evidence to support the notion that oligodendrocyte and myelin abnormalities may contribute to the functional dysconnectivity found in the major psychiatric disorders. The putamen, which is an important hub in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical loop, has been implicated in a broad spectrum of psychiatric illnesses and is a central target of their treatments. Previously we reported a reduction in the numerical density of oligodendrocytes and oligodendrocyte clusters in the prefrontal and parietal cortex in schizophrenia. Oligodendrocyte clusters contai...

Life after opioids: 'We have not served our patients well' More than 3 million Australians are living with chronic pain, and the medical system is struggling to help them as it turns away from its reliance on opioids www.theguardian.com “You may have a patient that has been on a stable dose of opioids for 10 years, and then you start de-prescribing. Conclusion: This novel technology discriminates and quantifies subtle differences in behavior and neurological impairments in subjects afflicted with neurological injury/disease. KINARM assessments can be incorporated into multi-center trials (e.g., monitoring stroke motor recovery: NCT02928393). Further studies will determine if KINARM Labs can demonstrate a clinical effect with fewer subjects over a shorter trial period.
