Cardiac Electrical Modeling for Closed-Loop Validation of Implantable Devices

Conclusion: Regional electrophysiology and paths in the model match human action potentials, dynamic behavior, and cardiac activation sequences. Connected in closed loop with a pacing device in DDD mode, the model generates complex arrhythmia such as atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia. Such device-induced outcomes have been observed clinically and we can establish the key physiological features of the heart model that influence the device operation. Significance: These findings demonstrate how an abstract heart model can be used for device validation and to design personalized treatment.

Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is a commonly performed procedure, and the tip location remains important for catheter function and patient outcomes. CVCs placed too cranial increase rates of catheter dysfunction, vessel thrombosis or/and stenosis. CVCs placed too caudal can lead to arrhythmia, thrombus or atrial perforation. While some risk factors for CVC tip migration have been defined in the literature, the relationship of body mass index (BMI), gender, and laterality of access to CVC tip migration remains unclear.

AbstractAl Absi and colleagues report their early results of the Fontan procedure in 87 consecutive patients between August 2008 and July 2017 in a tertiary care hospital. The use of the intra/extracardiac fenestration is a promising modification because it is unlikely to be occluded by surrounding tissue and may be associated with decreased pleural effusions, length of hospital stay, and incidence of postoperative arrhythmias.
