We aim to explore how health literacy (HL) as a non-clinical factor is associated with the decision-making process regarding VA type selection. Using data from 20 dialysis centers across Slovakia (n = 542, mean age = 63.6, males = 60.7%), the association of HL with type of VA (arteriovenous fistula (AVF) vs. central venous catheter (CVC)) was analyzed using a logistic regression model adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidity. Sociodemographic data and data on nine domains of HL were collected by questionnaire. Data on VA and comorbidity were obtained from a medical records. CONCLUSION: The observed high rate of AVF at the start of hemodialysis and of the switch from CVC to AVF in the first year, although declining since 2008, is a positive outcome. However, over one-third of patients maintain the CVC as vascular access for the first year because of unmodifiable factors, such as gender, age, comorbidity. The present study suggests that logistics/management and assistance/welfare problems may contribute to the delay or lack of AVF placement in incident hemodialysis patients or within the first year of dialysis. Thyroid cysts are commonly shown in ultrasound examination and their recognition should not pose a problem. Herby we present an uncommon case of the thyroid cyst unintended puncture, during an attempt of CVC insertion. No further clinical consequences were observed. CONCLUSION: Tunneled dialysis catheter placement through the occluded internal jugular and subclavian veins with micropuncture technique is effective and safe in patients with limited vascular access. The recanalization of the occluded conventional access routes should always be kept in mind to allow the preservation of vascular accesses for future requirements. This study aimed to report use of, and outcomes associated with, bAVFs in a contemporary cohort of peritoneal dialysis patients. METHOD: A single-centre, retrospective study of PD patients commencing dialysis between 2006-2016, stratified according to presence/absence of bAVF.
