Authors: Olschewski H, Canepa M, Kovacs G Abstract Chronic heart and lung diseases are very common in the elderly population. The combination of chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is also common and, according to current guidelines, these patients should be treated for both diseases. In patients with heart failure, beta-blockers are very important drugs because their use is associated with significantly improved morbidity and mortality. These beneficial effects were documented in patients with and without COPD, although theoretically there is a risk for bronchoconstriction, parti...

Authors: Zhan X, Yang M, Chen Y, Zhang L, Yan C, Wang Y Abstract Objective: Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that dialysis patients are at increased risk for stroke. However, the impact of dialysis modalities on stroke risk remains controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) on stroke risk. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed to identify articles comparing the stroke outcomes of dialysis patients. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were extracted...

Conclusion: The risk factors like high TG, low HDL, high BP, and high fasting glucose were found higher particularly in younger population which may lead to diagnosis &complications of diabetes, hypertension and lipid abnormality. Due to changing physiology in young and middle age population these individuals are moving towards metabolic syndrome easily and needs frequent monitoring, preventive checkups, and lifestyle changes to prevent complications.

CornishAbstractBackgroundThe Omega-3 Index (O3I; erythrocyte EPA+DHA as a percent of total fatty acids) is inversely related to risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The cardioprotective target O3I is 8%-12%. O3I levels in American regions with high CVD risk are poorly characterized.PurposeTo determine the O3I in individuals participating in a Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP) survey in seven US cities in the CVD “belt.&rdquo...

Photo credit Huber Chaland Dear Carol: My dad has been Mom’s caregiver since her stroke ten years ago. Dad’s 79 and healthy except for Type 2 diabetes. I visit my parents every few days to help them out so I set up both of their medications for the week but Dad often leaves the diabetes medication in the pillbox. When I ask him why he says that the medication makes him feel dizzy and sluggish so he hates taking it. I remind him of the possible complications of diabetes but he brushes me off because he’s of normal weight and used to be physically active. That makes no sense since he has diabetes no ma...

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in computational capacity and the volume of data stored which has fuelled progress in machine learning methodology. Increasing attention is turning towards the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare; AI is facilitating the diagnosis of several conditions, from atrial fibrillation to stroke, and the treatment of others, such as depression and anxiety. Hepatology could see significant change with the introduction of AI but there are important challenges to consider for ensuring successful integration and implementation.

Conclusions: A considerable proportion of patients with acute ischemic stroke arrives at the ED after the 4.5-h threshold for performing intravenous thrombolysis. Non-smokers, patients with a family history of CVD, with moderately severe stroke and those who use the EMS are more likely to arrive on time. PMID: 31293186 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionBoth too low and too high baseline TC level were associated with higher risk of total, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality. Variability of TC could be a risk factor of total and CVD mortality, independent of mean TC level. Future studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Publication date: Available online 12 July 2019Source: NeuropsychologiaAuthor(s): Marine Thomasson, Arnaud Saj, Damien Benis, Didier Grandjean, Frédéric Assal, Julie PéronAbstractWhile the role of the cerebellum in emotion recognition has been explored with facial expressions, its involvement in the auditory modality (i.e., emotional prosody) remains to be demonstrated. The present study investigated the recognition of emotional prosody in 15 patients with chronic cerebellar ischaemic stroke and 15 matched healthy controls, using a validated task, as well as clinical, motor, neuropsychological, and psy...
