Misclassification of Mitral Valve Disease and Rate of Surgical Repair in the STS Database

ConclusionsSource document and imaging review of MV surgery revealed significant discordance with post hoc chart abstraction methods. A more detailed data entry methodology is necessary to accurately report the true disease etiology and repair rates for primary MR.

ConclusionsRobotically assisted mitral valve repair was feasible, safe, and therapeutically effective in the first 100 cases, with a minimal learning curve. The robotically assisted approach provides a high-quality surgical view and tremorless suture/cut handling, which will contribute to further development of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.

ConclusionsIn favor of AVr, good patient selection, amenable techniques for the suitable pathology will give a good target hence the aim of the work.

GammieAbstractBackgroundResectional and artificial cordal repair techniques are effective strategies for degenerative mitral valve (MV) repair. However, resectional repair requires a tailored approach using various techniques, while cordal repair offers a simpler, easily-reproducible repair. Our approach has evolv...

This study shows that CA are released from periventricular and subpial regions to the cerebrospinal fluid and are present in the cervical lymph nodes, into which cerebrospinal fluid drains through the meningeal lymphatic system. We also show that CA can be phagocytosed by macrophages. We conclude that CA can act as containers that remove waste products from the brain and may be involved in a mechanism that cleans the brain. Moreover, we postulate that CA may contribute in some autoimmune brain diseases, exporting brain substances that interact with the immune system, and hypothesize that CA may contain brain markers that m...

ConclusionsFAP is an excellent substrate for complex mitral valve leaflet patch repairs and can be used with the expectation of durable, long-term valve function, without evidence of late patch calcification, stiffness, or aneurysmal degeneration.

Injection drug use-related infective endocarditis hospitalizations have markedly increased over the past decade. Right-sided infective endocarditis is strongly associated with intravenous drug use, and 90% of right-sided endocarditis involves the tricuspid valve. There has been an increase in the need for surgical therapy for tricuspid valve endocarditis. In this issue of Operative Techniques, Brescia and associates discuss the indications for tricuspid valve surgery for endocarditis and provide detailed description of techniques for tricuspid valve leaflet repair and augmentation.

This study aimed to analyze the early and mid-term outcomes of aortic valve replacement with bovine pericardium in the treatment of aortic valve regurgitation. From January 2015 to March 2018, 36 patients (19 men; mean ± standard deviation [SD] age, 46.70 ± 16.60 years) underwent aortic valve replacement with bovine pericardium. The bovine pericardium was intraoperatively measured and shaped using an Ozaki template, according to the shape and size of the individual patient's aortic valve leaflets. Additional procedures were performed, including ventricular septal defect repair in 5 cases, mitral valve reconstr...

A toddler after tetralogy of Fallot graft repair in infancy was diagnosed with endocarditis. Blood cultures were positive for Kingella kingae and serology was positive Coxiella burnetii. He was treated medically and surgically. A postoperative specimen polymerase chain reaction confirmed a coinfection. A comprehensive patient history was imperative for identification of an unlikely infection at this age.

Subungual hematomas can be a terror. They are painful, ugly-looking, nefarious, and sometimes confusing. The ultimate goal is to drain the accumulated blood and relieve the painful pressure. The best intervention is easy and straightforward: Leave the nail in place, and evacuate the blood under it.
