Two Oakland health giants give $45 million to Newsom's new housing fund

Gov. Gavin Newsom, the self-proclaimed “homeless czar” of California, called upon the private sector last week "to step up" by contributing to his new housing fund to combat homelessness. That call was answered Friday by Kaiser Permanente and Blue Shield of California to the tune of $45 million. Kaiser was the first to announce it would contributed $25 million to the governor's housing fund and — soon after — Blue Shield of California said it too would donate $20 million.
