Abstract Bilateral sensorineural deafness and unilateral cochlear ossification have rarely been described in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). A 21-year-old man presented to a hospital with right-sided sudden hearing loss and tinnitus. He was diagnosed with CML. Five days later, sudden hearing loss appeared in the other ear. Conclusions: CI provides greater gains in functional hearing for patients with MD compared with age-matched controls. Patients with active MD seem to perform better with respect to SRS following CI than patients with inactive status.

ConclusionWe demonstrated that a unilateral CI benefitted many fields and that the second sequential CI leads again to additional improvement. Bilateral CI implantation should, therefore, be the standard form of auditory rehabilitation in deafened adults.

Conclusions: This study demonstrates the long-term benefit of binaural hearing rehabilitation in AHL and bilaterally-deaf patients not only regarding speech perception but also HRQoL, tinnitus distress and subjective hearing quality. Bilaterally-deafened patients present lower scores preoperatively, but they did not differ from AHL patients 2 years after CI. Up to now, this is the first study evaluating the outcome of CI in AHL patients compared to bilaterally-implanted patients and demonstrating the benefit of binaural hearing rehabilitation in these specific groups.
