Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Updates on Morbidity and Mortality Outcomes

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a well-described condition, primarily affecting infants born premature, that continues to burden healthcare systems with associated morbidities and mortality. Although the pathophysiology of NEC remains incompletely understood, NEC is known to cause an inflammatory bowel necrosis, with infants at risk for developing myriad clinical sequelae, including neurodevelopment impairment, short bowel syndrome with or without intestinal failure (IF), intestinal structuring, and cholestatic liver disease driven by chronic parenteral nutrition (PN) use and the inflammatory cascade.
