Paraneoplastic bullous pemphigoid – a sign of clear cell renal carcinoma

We present an 84y woman with a three week history of erythematous rash, and 48hrs of bullae. A left clear cell renal cell carcinoma was identified on CT imaging during the presentation. Subsequent removal of the tumour resulted in resolution of bullous pemphigoid symptoms. This first-of-kind case and successful result strengthens the association between renal cell carcinoma and paraneoplastic bullous pemphigoid, arguing for a high degree of clinical suspicion in unexplained presentations of bullous pemphigoid.

Authors: Zhang Y, Bi L, Hu Z, Cao W, Zhuang D Abstract It has been found that>90% of oral cancer patients suffer from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The 5-year survival rate of SCC is ~50%, despite the availability of different treatments. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has been developed as a novel therapy for cancer, resisting bacterial infection and inhibiting atherosclerotic plaque progression. The present study investigated the efficacy of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME)-mediated SDT on the A-253 epidermoid cancer cell line. The cytotoxicity of HMME and the survival rate of cells following SDT were exami...

Authors: Wang J, Yang X, Han S, Zhang L Abstract Disrupted centrosome-associated family protein expression can result in the detrimental duplication of centrosomes, causing genomic instability and subsequent carcinogenesis. Limited research has demonstrated that centrosomal protein 131 (CEP131) exhibits oncogenic activity in osteosarcoma, hepatocellular carcinoma and breast cancer. The present study demonstrated that there is an association between CEP131 expression and advanced Tumor-Node-Metastasis stage (P=0.016), and positive regional lymph node metastasis (P=0.023) in 91 cases of non-small cell lung cancer. A5...

Authors: Zhou DN, Ye CS, Yang QQ, Deng YF Abstract Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) regulate numerous genes and influence the progression of various human diseases, including cancer. The role of regulatory ncRNAs implicated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), as well as their target genes, remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate specific long non-coding (lnc)RNAs, circular RNAs (circRNAs) and mRNAs associated with the molecular pathogenesis of NPC, and to predict the underlying target genes of specific lncRNAs and circRNAs. The expression levels of lncRNAs, circRNAs and mRNAs in NPC and chronic nasopharyngit...

In conclusion, the present study revealed that the upregulation of RBM47 accelerated the malignant progression of NSCLC, indicating that RBM47 may be a potential biomarker for NSCLC progression and a therapeutic target for NSCLC. PMID: 32218862 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Kim MY Abstract Induction of apoptosis in human cancer cells by Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai has been considered to be a potential therapeutic target for cancer treatment; however, the underlying mechanisms of action are not well understood. The present study investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO•) and inhibitors of apoptosis (IAPs) during apoptosis induced by Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai extracts (SQE) in p53-wild type (WT) and p53-null HCT116 colon carcinoma cells. Trypan blue exclusion and Annexin V/propidium iodide assays were used to test for antiproliferation, and apoptosis and cell cycle. Griess ...

This study aimed to investigate the associations between melatonin, MMPs, TIMPs and the histopathological characteristics of patients with OSCC. A total of 40 men with OSCC (mean age, 57±7 years) and 30 healthy men (mean age, 56±5 years) were enrolled in the present study. Enzyme immunoassays were used to measure the serum levels of melatonin, MMP-9, MMP-2, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 before and after transoral surgery for OSCC. Serum melatonin level was significantly lower in patients with OSCC compared with controls, both pre-surgery and 2 days after surgery (P

In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that circRNAs were dysregulated in bladder cancer tissues compared with matched normal samples. Pathway analysis was also performed to predict the binding of miRNAs to the dysregulated circRNAs. The results revealed that hsa_circ_100242 may be involved in bladder cancer initiation and progression by sponging miR-145. These findings may provide further insights into the functional and therapeutic roles of circRNAs in bladder cancer. PMID: 32218853 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Li X, Liu C, Zhao X, Wang R, Gu N, Shen H, Li X, Wang L, Li C Abstract Effects of CDK6 regulated by miR-298 on proliferation and apoptosis of thyroid cancer cells were explored. Seventy-five cases of thyroid carcinoma and adjacent tissues were collected. The expression levels of miR-298 and CDK6 mRNA in tissues and cells were detected by RT-PCR. In addition, thyroid cancer cells and human normal thyroid cells Nthy-ori3-1 were purchased, with the former transfected with miR-298-mimics, miR-298-inhibitor, miR-NC, si-CDK6, si-NC, Sh-CDK6, Sh-NC to build cell models. Then the expression levels of miR-298 and C...

Authors: Kang Y, Cui Y, Tan M Abstract Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an epithelial malignancy of the head and neck that is prevalent in China. The present study investigated the molecular mechanisms of microRNA-212 (miR-212) and E74-like factor 3 (ELF3) in NPC cell lines and tissues. Using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, the present study identified that miR-212 expression was downregulated in NPC cell lines and tissues. Furthermore, an elevated expression level of miR-212 was revealed to inhibit NPC cell proliferation, as determined using a cell counting kit-8 assay in vitro. ELF3 was identified as a d...
