Combining Self-Debriefing and Group Debriefing in Simulation

In all types of simulations, debriefing is a crucial component of the experience that stimulates learning through reflection. Self-debriefing following both in-person and virtual simulations is being explored. In this article, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of combining two methods of debriefing to optimize learning and extend reflection. More specifically, we examine the combination of using written self-debriefs followed by facilitated group debriefs. This discussion paper provides debriefing options for educators to meet their students and educational needs.
