Schmieder, Krzysztof NarkiewiczAbstractObjectiveThe aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that alterations in large arteries are associated with microvascular remodelling and decreased retinal capillary blood flow.MethodsThe study group comprised of 88 patients with essential hypertension and 32 healthy controls. Retinal microcirculation was evaluated by scanning laser Doppler flowmetry. Macrovascular changes were assessed on the basis of arterial stiffness measurement (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity), its hemodynamic consequences (central pulse pressure, augmentation pressure, augmentation index) and intima media thickness of common carotid artery.ResultsPulse wave velocity was inversely correlated to mean retinal capillary blood flow in hypertensive patients (R = −0.32, p

We report central invasive haemodynamic parameters at rest and exercise during a 3 year follow‐up after HTx in a sub‐study of the SCandiavian Heart transplant Everolimus De novo stUdy with earLy calcineurin inhibitor avoidancE trial. We hypothesized that the nephroprotective properties, the less development of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), and the antifibrotic properties of EVR, in comparison with CNI‐based immunosuppression, would demonstrate favourable invasive haemodynamic profiles in patients at rest and during exercise. Methods and resultsNinety of 115 HTx recipients randomized to EVR or CNI treatment per...

ConclusionsIsolated agenesis of the corpus callosum is not innocuous, and patients with this defect require a strict neurocognitive follow-up. We provide an informative reference tool useful for the postnatal neuropsychological screening of patients with isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum.

ConclusionsWe found a seasonal variation in the risk of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in a large cohort of Danish nulliparous women. The highest risk was seen in women with the estimated date of conception in June and August, that is, during summer. Seasonal variation in vitamin D status may explain this association.

Authors: Somannavar VG, Williams GC Abstract Objective: The present study intend to determine the association of anatomical site and clinical outcome in intracerebral hemorrhage patients with or without intraventricular extension. Methods: The present 1-year cross-sectional study included 56 patients presenting with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage with or without intraventricular extension. Relevant data were collected through a detailed interview with either the patient or the attender. Clinical examination was performed with the help of a predesigned and pretested proforma. Anatomical site of intracerebr...

It is unclear how microangiopathic changes in skeletal muscle vary among systemic vascular pathologies. We therefore analyzed the capillary fine structure in skeletal muscle from patients with arterial hypertension (HYPT), diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) or intermittent claudication – peripheral arterial disease (IC/PAD). Tablet-based image analysis (TBIA) was carried out to largely re-evaluate 5,000 transmission electron micrographs of capillaries from 126 vastus lateralis biopsies of 75 individuals (HYPT, T2DM or IC/PAD patients as well as healthy individuals before and after endurance exercise training) used in pr...

This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of LSPS model assessed by ultrasound in well characterized patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease. Methods Eligible patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease were retrospectively enrolled between January 2017 and March 2018, who had undergone routine clinical and laboratory tests, liver stiffness measurement, ultrasound examination, and computed tomography scanning. Spleen sizes were evaluated by ultrasound and computed tomography reconstructed model, respectively. The correlation and agreement of spleen size and LSPS derived from ultrasound and c...

Abstract Ionizing radiation exposure to the lens of the eye is a known cause of cataractogenesis. Administrative data from the Ontario Health Insurance Program was used to examine the association between low-dose radiation exposure from head CT scans and cataract extraction surgery for 16 million Ontarians over a 22-year period (1994-2015). Subjects were grouped based on the number of head CT scans they received, and a Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to determine if there was a correlation with cataract surgery. Covariates included in the analysis were age, sex, diabetes, hypertension and prior history ...

CONCLUSIONS Comorbid risk factors for CVD are independently associated with optical coherence tomography–derived measurements of subfoveal choroidal thickness in a vasculopathic population of U.S. veterans, and there are detectable differences in subfoveal choroidal thickness between groups with and without CVD risk factors. Larger studies with adequate controls and longitudinal design are necessary to assess the clinical role of SFCT measurements in CVD risk analysis.
