Different associations between serum urate and diabetic complications in men and postmenopausal women

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a global healthcare burden, leading to chronic vascular complications which are classified into macro- and microvascular diseases by vascular size, including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CVD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and diabetic retinopathy (DR) [1]. A recent review reports that half of adults with T2DM present with diabetic microvascular complications and 27% with macrovascular complications [2]. These multiple heterogeneous vascular complications, of which different individuals may have different ones, are associated with increased disability, frailty and reduced life expectancy [3].
