Inhaled Nitrous Oxide for Labor Analgesia

The use of inhaled nitrous oxide for labor analgesia is uncommon but increasing in the United States. It is widely used in several European countries and in Australia and New Zealand. The history of its use for the relief of pain during labor and its efficacy and side effects compared with other methods of labor analgesia are presented. Special equipment is necessary for its safe administration.
